Biography - Sharlena Larkin

I was born in Dallas, Texas on August 27, 1975, and lived in the Dallas metroplex until June 1999.

Art has always been a very important part of my life. During my childhood I took every possible opportunity to learn as much as I could about all mediums of art.

In elementary school I was especially interested in drawing and spent much of my time practicing. In Junior High I developed an interest for painting, and my parents enrolled me in painting classes with a gifted artist named Rexanna Tipton. At her Golden Palette Studio, I developed my painting skills in acrylics. During that time, I entered my very first art shows and won many awards. The joy I experienced from painting in that studio and being in an environment focused completely on art crystalized my lifelong desire to be an artist. From then on it was important to me to continue taking art classes.

At Nimitz High School I studied art under Danny White, who was my mentor and deeply influenced my artistic development. It was in his classes that I was introduced to sculpture and ceramics.

After graduating from high school in 1993, I attended the University of Dallas, and majored in Art with a concentration in Sculpture. In my sophomore year, during the Spring of 1995, I spent the semester studying in Rome, Italy at the University of Dallas Rome Campus. I spent my final year at UD working on my Senior Exhibition, episodes of pondering, which is documented in this website. I was very fortunate to spend those years studying under an exceptional artist and teacher, Cameron Schoepp.

During that time, I was introduced to the work of Eva Hesse, Louise Bourgeois, and Kiki Smith. These three female artists greatly influenced me and the direction that my work took. I graduated from the University of Dallas with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sculpture on May 16, 1999.

I learn from observing nature, and my fascination with the subtle and minute intricacies that I discover in the world around me fuels my work. Repetition and the repetitive act are significant to me. Through repeatedly drawing and making multiples of an object and becoming consumed by the simple and often subtle beauty of it, I come to a closer understanding of it. The process of repetition becomes a means of contemplation and pondering.

I am currently living and working in Seattle, WA. I plan on going to Graduate School in a year or two to work towards a Master of Fine Arts Degree. I will keep you posted! Thanks for your interest in my work.
